I have to admit to being a little jealous of the folks at Carbon Design Group. They create and build some pretty awesome stuff. Take their much lauded domino clock. Not your thing? Maybe you feel like it’s too much art and not enough function. Ok then, have a look at their microfluidics controller. It is unquestionably both beautiful and functional.
Fortunately, we get to work on awesome things as well. In this case, we were privileged to work with Carbon’s exceptional designers to build a world class site. When we first met with Carbon Design Group, they identified three primary reasons why their current site needed an overhaul:
- Their site was built in Flash. I will leave the discussion as to whether or not a site should be built in Flash to others. I will say here that the need to recompile changes and the limitations to search engine indexing were not working for Carbon.
- They needed to be able to update the site themselves. As I mentioned, Carbon makes some really cool stuff and wins awards for it. When they make something or win something, they want to talk about it on their site and they don’t want to call a developer to be able to do that.
- They wanted to pour their design sentiments into a new site. Their old site was fine visually, but it didn’t fully represent the kind of professionalism they had grown into as a company. It was time to change that.
This project was particularly fun because we don’t always get to work with organizations that can appreciate the benefits of detailed front end development. If we had to work some magic to get helvetica – heavy to show a little not-so-heavy on IE8, they both noticed and applauded. Carbon cares deeply about design and that care shows mightily in their site. We are proud to place their site on our list of accomplishments.
